Timeless Love

I will watch over you
Dedicated to My Husband Dennis

Submitted by Susie

We lived next door to each other. He was 6 and I was 3. My mom tells the story of the two of us playing on the beach in Hawaii. We were building sand castles and I found a bug that I tried to eat. He stopped me and took my hand and said, " I will watch over you."

We lived next door to each other. He was 10 and I was 7. I remember that he was the one to teach me how to ride a bicycle, running along side so I didn't fall off.

We lived next door to each other. He was 19 and I was 16 going out on my first date. I remember him sitting on his front porch waiting for me.

We both moved from our family homes, he went to Law School and I went to Art School.

I had finished school and moved back home to the beach house on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii. I was sitting with my sketch pad and trying to see if I could capture the glorious sunset on paper. I looked up to see a jogger running across the beach. When he came even with the sidewalk, he stopped at the gate and smiled. He opened the gate and walked to the porch. I know he never took his eyes off of me because I never took my eyes off of him. He sat beside me. I was so nervous that I knocked over my water. We talked about everything and nothing at all. We watch the spectacular sunset and the moon rise.

We were staying next door to each other. He was 28 and I was 25. Walking on the beach, he took my hand, and said " When we were little, I watched over you. Now I want to watch over you for the rest of our lives."

Now we live in the same house just a little farther down the beach on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii. He is still watching over me but now I watch over him too.
