Love Stories of Hawaii

Timeless Love

Worth The Wait
Dedicated to My Husband

Submitted by Anonymous

My husband and I were married in 1991 when we were both just 18 years old. Our families were deeply concerned and not altogether supportive. Looking back, I can appreciate their apprehension. After all, my husband was in his first semester of college and I never started college because at least one of us had to work full time. We had an abundance of love, passion, affection, and respect for each other; unfortunately we had no money. We could not afford to go on any sort of honeymoon, not even for one night. We were married on a Friday night, and I returned to work as a grocery store cashier on Sunday morning.

Throughout the years, despite hard work and financial troubles, we continued to grow closer together and more in love. However, I could not get over that honeymoon I never had. Although I thought that I would eventually get over it, I never did. Everytime I saw any depiction of Hawaii in a magazine or on television, something stirred inside me. It was as if something was calling to me and I could not ignore it. There was something magical about Hawaii that went far beyond its breathtaking mountains and beaches, or its awe-inspiring volcanic activity. To this day, I do not have the ability to define that magic. All I knew was that I had no desire to visit the Greek Isles or the Caribbean, no matter how majestic their beauty. Hawaii was beckoning to me so gently, so powerfully, and I was powerless to resist.

In May 2003, for our 12 year wedding anniversary, we finally made it to Hawaii. It was without a doubt the most intense experience of our lives. We swam in turquoise waters, played with dolphins, experienced seven Polynesion cultures, attended a luau, walked alongside flowing lava, hiked to waterfalls, stood on windswept mountain cliffs, and fell asleep to the sound of crashing ocean waves every night. We experienced the thrill of falling in love all over again with each other, as well as the magic of falling in love with a people and a place called Hawaii. The spirit of Hawaii touched us and changed us forever, and it will reside in our hearts and minds always. It was a honeymoon worth waiting for, and a life experience that will be treasured forever.
