Love Stories of Hawaii

Timeless Love

Aloha R & R.
Dedicated to My Husband

Submitted by Anonymous

My husband was in the Army infantry 1968-69 in Vietnam and during July 1969 we enjoyed his R & R together in Hawaii on Waikiki (we were "newlyweds" having been marrried only 10 months before he left for Vietnam). We remember the center at Ft. DeRussy where they drove up the bus loads of soldiers for them to walk down a human hallway of their wives & girlfriends whom they hadn't seen for months- the instruction before their arrival was to "grab your guy as he walks past". Fast forward to 2003, my husband with over 30 yrs in the Army Reserves and having volunteered for active duty following 9/11 is stationed for one yr. at Ft. Shafter,Hawaii I flew over to visit him and we were staying at the Hale Koa , we took an evening walk around the area and found that the "reunion center" still exists in the form of an office building. There was a picnic table in the back under a large tree and we had tears in our eyes as we remembered the details of our reunion there so many years and separations before.
