A Papa Grows Up – By Susan Brannigan-Rampp (Gina&Greg sequel)
(A letter from an apologetic father to his eldest daughter, Gina)
I sit here in my house looking at a picture of my new grandson, Giuseppe. Thank you for inviting an old man to Hawaii when he had shut the door on your love because of stupid pride.
When you were a little girl, you were perfect and I wanted nothing but the best for you. I wanted you to know about our people, our traditions in Italy to give you a sense of who you are and what is important in life. I had hoped you would one day marry a nice Italian boy from the old country. When you took off to marry some sailor from America, I felt betrayed and angry.
But somewhere between you leaving and my anger, I received your letter telling me about my new grandson, Giuseppe. What kind of father had I become if I could cut my lovely daughter out of my life when she was trying to show me that family traditions don't die. They can be born again. You giving your love to another person and extending that love through a child, my grandson, has made me see what love really is.
Love does put a lock on people in honor of tradition.
Love lets those traditions grow wings as you did my darling daughter when you flew to Hawaii to be with the love of your life, Greg.
You have grown into a lovely woman and radiant mother. Your own mama is smiling on you now I know. How can I express my thanks for you being able to find a place in your heart for a fool of a man. The young has given lessons to the old and, for that, I thank you.
With all my love,
