Hawaii calls me home
Dedicated to My husband and My Father
Submitted by Anonymous
The Hawaiian Islands are what dreams are made of. My love and longing for Hawaii began as a little girl when my father moved our family to Oahu. As a little girl some of my fondest memories of my father are in Hawaii. Maybe he had more time to spend with us, maybe it was just the magical island in the eyes of child that burned the memories deep into me. Whatever the reason, Hawaii is where home is in my heart. My father passed away 15 years ago and so when I return to Hawaii, I feel close to him and remember him so vividly.
My husband and I have been married 8 years and he has heard my stories of Hawaii and how dear she is to me. This past year we took a vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, I've been there several times, but this was his first Hawaiian experience. We have seven children and getting away for the first time for an entire week by ourselves was incredible. It was as though we were dating again and feel in love all over.
It didn't take my husband long to realize why I loved Hawaii so dearly. In no time at all he too was enchanted.
Beautiful sunny Hawaii was rainy most of our trip and the gorgeous blue ocean was tinted brown with all the sand in her waves, yet still her beauty shined through and captivated us.
Finally, a sunny day and we headed for North shore. Sunning a safe distance away from the crashing waves, or so we thought, we were enjoying our day at the beach. Before we knew it a huge wave swept in, I was submersed in water on my hands and knees grasping to my husbands leg. By the time the water subsided, our belongings had been swept out to sea. We watched, waited and even prayed that our wallets would return, but the ocean unforgiving as she is had taken them.
We were stranded in paradise, no ID's, no wallets, no credit cards or cash. We didn't do a lot of the things we had planned, but we an incredibly memorable experience, more memorably than had we done all we had hoped.
My husband and I fell in love again, was it being away from children, hectic schedules, or was it the magic of Hawaii, the sights, sounds and smells of Aloha that helped us recapture what we didn't even know had quietly slipped away from us?
At the end of our vacation, my husband said this was his best vacation ever. Even with the loss of our wallets. That's Aloha!
Ever since I was a child, I feel as though Hawaii calls me, beacons me to return to her. Every few years I am fortunate enough to visit her, run in her waters, watch her sunsets and enjoy her. I long for Hawaii, her magic and beauty and look forward to the day I will once again return.
