Timeless Love

My Love Story
Dedicated to Rick Dart

Submitted by Michelle

I never thought I'd write about my own love story because I doubted I would ever find true love. But I have fallen in love. I first met Rick when his son was hospitalized due to diabetes. I was a single mom of a one year old son and working as a nurse practitioner in a children's diabetes program. Rick had recently lost his wife and moved to be closer to family. I began seeing them in our office every three months with phone communication between visits as customary for diabetes care. My heart went out to them for all the struggles they were facing. After several months of knowing them, Rick asked me out to dinner. I said no because I didn't want to jeopardize our professional relationship. I also wasn't ready for a relationship emotionally. I was struggling with my son's father's lack of committment to me and my son. We continued with our nurse-patient relationship.

After about three years, Rick asked me out to dinner, stating he wanted to thank me for all I did for his son. At first I said no. I still didn't want to take a chance with our professional relationship. I still wasn't sure I was ready to go on a date. My life was my son and my career. During this time, my son's father had disappeared. My mother convinced me to go to dinner. After all, it wasn't supposed to be a date. We went out to dinner and saw a horrible movie, yet it was a wonderful evening. I felt so comfortable with him. We talked about going on another date and decided I could no longer be his son's nurse practitioner. Before I met her, I spoke with Rick's mother on the phone. She told him that he would someday marry me. I don't thing either of us was confident of that.

Before long, we were living together and engaged to be married. Our first date was in March and we were married by the end of August that same year. I felt I was meant to be a nurse, a mother and now, Rick's wife. It felt natural. I had never known true love before Rick. I learned what it was like to feel unconditional love, to have someone love and support me in all that I do and believe in. I'm right where I belong.

Four months after we were married, we found that Rick has early Parkinson's Disease. One day he told me he wants to go to Hawaii before he may not be able to enjoy it due to the Parkinson's Disease. I would like to take him to Hawaii because he has fulfilled a dream I was afraid could never be reality and I want to help him fulfill his dreams, too.
