Love Stories of Hawaii

Timeless Love

Delicate Line
Dedicated to Jared Spangler

Submitted by Anonymous

My name is Sue, and upon my arrival in Hawaii, I fell in love with my soulmate. However, there is a big problem; he is white and I am not. You would think that this wouldn't be a problem in a world that supposedly embraces "equal rights," but, if you believe this lie, you have a lot to learn. Let me tell you a little bit about my life with the man I love. We were in the subway when a large group of black men surrounded us and said, solely to me, "didn't your daddy teach that interracial dating is wrong?" Can you belive that? Every single day we deal with these stares from people as if we have four heads. As if we are doing something disgusting. I was so scared to meet his family. Would they shun me? Hate me? It is terrifying to face such a hateful world alone. Everyday I thank god that I have my lover by my side. We laugh in the face of adversity and grow stronger. In the words of Jennifer Hykel, "Today I am scared, but when comes tomorrow, my heart will know no sorrow. I will not know fear. I will cry no tears. Tomorrow I am stronger." So here I stand today, tomorrow, forever. I straddle the delicate line bewteen races. Not to the left, not to the right, but directly in the middle. Lindsey Albrecht said "The less we look with our eyes, the more we will see with our hearts." I am NOT in an interracial relationship. I am simply a woman madly in love with a man.
