Love Stories of Hawaii

Timeless Love

First Love/Last Love/Forever Love
Dedicated to Jim Swetnam

Submitted by Deborah

I chose him when I was 12. I married him when I was 20. We've lived happily on a teacher's salary and a secretary's salary. We built our dream home with our own hands and very little outside help. We raised two boys who have become amazing men. Things haven't always been easy, but they haven't been too tough. If money were the measure, most would say we are below average; but material things are not our priority. In February, 2004, we learned the meaning of hard times. The man I fell in love with at 12 was to be taken from me by Lou Gehrig's disease - the most cruel disease I can imagine. We struggled together to come to grips and prepare for the end of our life together. But God had other plans. After almost 6 months of preparing for death, we found the diagnosis was wrong. If we get no other gifts in our lives, we will never complain. The disease he actually has is treatable, and we ask no more. My dream for 36 years has been a vacation in Hawaii. Our little joke is, "Hawaii? I'm fine, can we go there?" We're probably too old now to bike down a mountain, but how I would love to look into his eyes and say, "Hawaii? Are you having fun here?"
