Long Distance Love

The Proposal
Dedicated to Ryan Michael

Submitted by Jacqueline

Ryan and I met 7 1/2 years ago during my freshman year of college and it was certainly a case of love at first sight. There was no doubt in either of our minds that someday we would be married. We vowed to finish school and start our respective careers first, so that is exactly what we did. Five years of college for me in Ohio, four years of flight instructing and college for him in Pennsylvania equals a lot of time spent apart! I was hired as a kindergarten teacher in Ohio and he as a pilot for USAirways in New York. Through all of this separation, we managed to maintain a wonderful, long-distance relationship. The thought of marriage was just that, always a thought. The reality of who was going to live where was always glooming overhead.

Friday, April 23, 2004 was just another day in my classroom full of 6 year olds when over the Public Address system comes the voice of my love, my best friend. Not only did I hear his voice, but that voice that I love so much was reciting the most beautiful words I have ever heard, for all of my students to hear! As I stared at that little speaker box in disbelief, in walks Ryan, dressed to kill with a gorgeous flower arrangement in hand. He gets down on one knee and opens a little black box which contains the most stunning, unbelievable ring I have ever seen. In my state of shock, I turn around to look at my students faces, and they are each holding a letter to spell the words, "PLEASE SAY YES"! As if they needed to ask! It was the most romantic, well thought-out proposal ever, and it was all for me!

Once the excitement in the room settled down, my students got right to business, and began planning our wedding right there for us. Before we knew it, we had 7 ring bearers and 7 flower girls. As we were getting ready to leave, one student shouts out, "Mr. Zapko, we think you should take Miss Laine to Hawaii and marry her there!" ... and that is how getting married in Hawaii has become our dream.
