Love Stories of Hawaii

Second Chance Love

Love is in the Air
Dedicated to Johnny

Submitted by Jacie

My first chance for true love didn't exactly pan out. Two months before getting married, I realized it was a mistake and called it off. However, I had already purchased the airfare and hotel room for the honeymoon and didn't want to lose the non-refundable accommodations. I didn't have to twist my mom's arm for her to come with me. Thus, my "mommy~moon" began.

My serendipitous meeting with Johnny began with the travel agency. My itinerary showed the wrong departure time and I missed the days last flight out. My mom and I stayed overnight in Salt Lake City and left early the next morning. Half-awake at 5:00 a.m., I first saw Johnny at the check-in line. But, what were the odds I would actually talk to him?

I boarded the plane and was surprised at my luck. I was seated across the aisle from him! Completely out of character, I initiated the conversation and asked, "Is it cold in here or is it just me?" It may not have been the most smooth pick-up line, but it worked. As we chatted on my connecting flight, Johnny told me he was also headed for Hawaii. He had just graduated from the Air Force Academy and was spending a month in Hawaii before beginning pilot training. We landed in San Francisco and kept talking throughout the lay-over.

It seemed fate wanted us to keep talking because, once again, Johnny and I were seated across the aisle from one another on this four-hour flight. The blatant signs were too much to ignore. His flight had been changed earlier that morning as well. Both of us had fallen victim to travel inconveniences, but neither of us cared too much anymore. Before I finished writing my number on a napkin, he gave me his. I knew I wanted to spend time with him in Waikiki.

I tried calling Johnny that night but couldn't reach him. It took a third terrific coincidence to seal our fate. The next afternoon while walking along the crowded streets of Waikiki, I heard someone calling my name. It was Johnny calling me from his hotel room (oddly enough, his hotel was right across the street from mine). He happened to look down from his balcony and see me. He ran downstairs -- he was out of breath when he caught up -- and asked me out that night. Under a full moon with warm ocean water at our feet, we shared our first kiss. We spent the week together exploring the island, talking on the beach until sunrise, and falling in love.

I was hesitant to go to Hawaii because I feared I would dwell on my decision to not get married. Instead, it turned out to be the best week of my life. Johnny and I are engaged, and I can't think of a better place to have our honeymoon than in Hawaii. My life's love story truly happened on the shores of Waikiki.
