Timeless Love

Twenty Years Later
Dedicated to Colby

Submitted by Jan

Twenty-five years ago, August 4th, 1979, my best friend and I became husband and wife. Colby and I had been high school sweethearts and had dated for five years. We knew we would one day be married, for it was quite obvious that we were soul mates. First, we had to get college under our belts. We both gradutated in May, 1979. During our senior year, we busily planned for our wedding day. Smart planning meant that we would give ourselves time through the summer to find jobs and a place to live so that we would be ready to share our lives together. Unfortunately, times were hard and jobs were nearly nonexistant. We were both fortunate enough to have summer jobs. Colby worked as a lifeguard at a pool and I waited on tables at a local restaurant. However, by the time August 4th rolled around, we couldn't afford to get married, much less go on a honeymoon. But we were in love and thought we could manage. Our parents chipped in and gave us a beautiful wedding. Our honeymoon, however, would have to be at our own expense. We traveled 2 hours away to Richmond, Virginia, to stay in a Holiday Inn with a pool. We returned home 2 days later to live with my parents.

After twenty-some years as husband and wife, Colby and I have 2 wonderful sons, a nice home, and good jobs. Our lives have been richly blessed. So for our twentieth anniversary, we finally got to experience a dream-come-true, though 20 years late, honeymoon in Maui, Hawaii. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will never forget. We decided then and there that we would love to visit Hawaii again, this time, for our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary on August 4, 2004. We would love to be able to stand on a sandy beach overlooking a beautiful Hawaiian sunset, reaffirming our love and devotion for the rest of our lives. Hopefully, this dream will soon come true.
