Second Chance Love

Kauai - the Isle of Love
Dedicated to Sharon Smith

Submitted by Connie

3 glorious, breezy warm days ALONE. I was surrounded by family; my mother, brother, sister, niece, nephew. But at 27 I was still alone. A recent breakup. A recent heartache. A recent shattering of all that I held as real.

Kauai was serene, calming, awe-inspiring, and the most perfect place on earth that I had ever been!

Seeing the Garden Island for the first time - alone. Feeling the romance of Hawaii - alone. Wanting to share the beauty - for it is too much for one person alone.

I made a vow one hot summer night on the beach along the Coconut Coast that when I returned to the Island (and I vowed that I would return) it would be with the love of my life.

For the next 10 years I dreampt of the tropical, green mountains of the Garden Isle and the pristine beaches of Poipu. In those dreams I was always with my family, and never with my love. Still, the contrast from the mountains to the beach was brilliant, the colors vibrant, and the breeze constant.

I found the love of my life, and for our 7 year anniversary we spent 11 days and romantic nights on Kauai.

And, we found that one place on the planet that is truly ideal, Malelupa. I told the love of my life that I want my ashes sprinkled in the blue-green waters there, to float along with the sea turtles and get washed away by the tide.

Now, when I dream of the island, I am not alone, but surrounded by the love of the people of Hawaii and the love of my life.

Kauai will forever be paradise, the place where love is meant to be. It is the most heartwrenching place to go alone and the most heartfulling place to embrace love.
