Long Distance Love

Maui No Ka Oi
Dedicated to Island Spirit

Submitted by Elizabeth

Like the wizard of Oz says... There's no place like home. As a teenager I've often left my island home for short trips and vacations. By the time I finally settled in, I was ready to return home. The feeling hit me hard in the pit of my stomach like seeing a new love, or an old one. At the present time I live in North Carolina with my new Ohana, I had missed 16 years of life with people I had originally thought of as my Family. Any true islander, hawaiian, or any one who has "Aloha" in their heart knows how it is. You can take the girl out of the islands, you can't take the islands out of this girl. People here ask "where are you from?" I guess it's my accent or because I eat sashimi (raw fish),maybe cause I fish like an old japanese fisherman at Kahului Harbor. I don't look different than anyone here but I know I am. Good thing I moved here when I did, I now know that I can Always return to my...Our paradise home, Mauka or Makai, there's nothing that time can do to the love I have for Maui and my friends, but there is an amount miles you can put between a island girl to make me appreciate my long distance love.
