Long Distance Love

Maine Connection
Dedicated to Lance, My forever Love!

Submitted by Linda

Growing up in Westbrook, Me., I never would have dreamed that I would one day live in Hawaii. Lance approached me one night at a club, and asked me to dance. He told me that he was in the U.S. Navy. We started dating shortly after meeting. Lance let me know that he would only be in Maine a short while, as the ship would set course for Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as its home port. After four and one half months of dating, they left for Hawaii. Lance said "I love you, Linda. I promise, you WILL see me again!" As the time passed, I gave up hope on hearing from him. I was in a new apartment, and one night the phone rang. It was Lance from Hawaii. We spoke on the phone every night for the next six months. He then came to visit me in Maine. When he returned to Hawaii, the phone calls resumed. One day, he offered to fly me to Hawaii for a visit. I did take him up on that. While we were vacationing, he took me to the Navy Exchange, and surprised me when he turned my focus to the diamond rings. We picked one out, and called our families to announce our engagement. Eleven months later, we were married in Maine. After just two months of marriage, I joined Lance in Hawaii, where we lived for two and one half years. Our son, Derek Kalani Mayhugh, got his middle name from the islands. A local Hawaiian friend interpreted "Kalani" to mean "of the heavens." Our Maine connection set in, as we are now living back in my home State. The connection will continue, as we are moving back to Hawaii in the fall of 2003 with yet another US Navy ship. We will now have the opportunity to show our children a very beautiful, historic, exciting, part of our Country. Hawaii will always hold a special place in our hearts.
