Love Stories of Hawaii

Long Distance Love

Our Journey
Dedicated to My loving husband Lance

Submitted by Linda

Lance and I met in Maine in 1995. We were at a nightclub, and he asked me to dance. Lance was in the US Navy, and the ship he was on was slated to homeport in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. We dated for three months before the ship left. Lance had told me he loved me, and assured me I would hear from him again. I gave up hope, and went on with my life. Some three months later, I received a call from Lance. He was in Hawaii. Lance and I talked on the phone every day for six months, until in February 1996, he flew from Hawaii to Maine to visit me. The phone calls continued after that, as he had to go back to the ship in Hawaii. Another six months of phone calls. Lance asked me to fly to Hawaii to visit him, and even offered to pay for my flight and place to stay. Who am I to turn down a free trip to Hawaii? Once there, we had a glorious two weeks in the beautiful tropics of Hawaii. While I was there, Lance surprised me. There we were at the Navy Exchange, and he turned me around to look at the counter of Engagement rings. I was in awe. We were officially engaged as I picked out my ring. Eleven months later, Lance flew from Hawaii to Maine, where we were married. Just a few months after that, I moved to Honolulu, HI. After one year and three months of living in Hawaii, we found out we were going to have a son. Having a big part of our relationship based in Hawaii, we decided he needed a Hawaiian middle name. We chose his name to be Derek Kalani Mayhugh. Hawaii has been, and always will be, a big part of my life.
