An Island Of Memories
Dedicated to The one I love.
Submitted by Ken
Aloha. Aloha. The gentle breath of the Pacific repeated its sonorous greeting. Aloha! A perfect evening in Hawaii. But not as perfect as it should have been for me.
When my wife and I were younger, our dream was to explore the wonders of Kauai together, to camp on the beaches, explore jungle streams, and revel in the beauty of the garden island. We promised each other that we would live our dream. Like so many dreams of so many people, we found too many easy excuses to put it off.
First it was work. Next came a young family. Then it was fate. Despite Deana's failing health, we still talked romantically of our trip to the islands and how we would walk, hand-in-hand, through the warm surf. When she felt stronger. When she vanquished the evil that spread though her now frail body.
Looking out over the last orange glow from my hotel room, I had no trouble remembering. Images of Deana flashed randomly in and out of my mind. Sporadic. Repeating. Lingering. Snippets of conversation. Words of remorse. Words of passion. Our Dream. The hours slipped by as I tried to resurrect her body from a haze of memories.
When I finally left the balcony and went inside, I was ready for sleep. I checked on Meagan and Kayla, and gently kissed their cheeks before going to bed. Even in sleep, the pleasure of their day on the beach was evident.
My first night in a paradise as splendid as we had imagined was missing just one precious thing. As I lay down and succumbed to the lure of a promised dream, I heard the sweet voice of my wife whisper in my ear, "Aloha."
