Love Stories of Hawaii

Timeless Love

A Memorial to the Love of My Life
Dedicated to John M. Roper 1944-1999

Submitted by Linda

I well remember that November when we visited our neighbor island of Kaua'i. We had visited an art gallery and found an artist that we really liked, Michael Tapp. We were lucky enough to meet him, and to visit with him and his wife in their home. We purchased one of his original oils, Essence of Kaua'i. It, and my love for you, John, were the inspirations for this verse:

"Essence of Kaua'i"

We have come
From yesterday to today;
From one stream
To another.
As the wild geese fly
To warmth and safety,
So we flew to each other,
And to the beauty and serenity
Of Kaua'i

We lived in Hawaii from September 1991 until you were diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and were forced to return to our home in Tennessee in May, 1999. You passed away, to the eternal paradise in June, 1999.

The time we spent in Hawaii will always have a special place in my heart. I believe that God gave us this special time, alone with each other, because He knew our time together was going to be so short. You left your earthly home while in the prime of your life. But I know that now you have attained your eternal home, and you reside safe and healed, in the boundlessness of God's love.

Aloha, my fragrant maile lei, I will join you again some day.
