Love Stories of Hawaii

Long Distance Love

Unexpected Love
Dedicated to Brian Geraghty

Submitted by Stephanie

Three years ago, I was a freshman track runner at the University of Kansas, missing home. I spent a lot of time on aol instant messager talking to my high school friends as well as random people interested in running. One night in December of 1999, a marine from Hawaii struck up a conversation with me, and quickly discovered I was originally from Iowa. He mentioned that the guy in the room with him was also from Iowa. Before I knew it, that guy was sitting at the computer typing away. Within 45 minutes we had become friends.

Over the next month we talked whenever we were online, and he eventually asked for my phone number. I was nervous and feared awkward silence, but it was anything but. It was actually like talking to my long lost best friend. I could tell Brian anything and knew that he would always be there to listen and give advice. We shared a mystical bond of trust.

We weren't dating, but we knew there was something there, and that's when we planned to meet. We met for the first time in Lawrence, Kansas, after 10 months of talking on the phone. I'll never forget the magic of the first time I saw his smile, the first time I felt his arms around me, and the first time we kissed, all within a minute! The love we suspected was there was cemented.

Over the next year and a half, we saw each other as much as we could, but it was difficult. Brian went on a routine float in August and was diverted to the Middle East after September 11th. Days and even weeks went by without contact. I cried myself to sleep many nights, but never once wavered in my love for him. I would wait. When he finally returned after 7 months, I flew to Hawaii to see him. After a wonderful reunion, he blindfolded me, drove me to Tantless Outlook at sunset, sang a beautiful song that he wrote, and asked for my hand in marriage. It was absolutely perfect. We still have another year to go before we'll be together forever. It hasn't been easy, but as long as we have each other, Brian and I can survive ANYTHING.
