Love Stories of Hawaii

Timeless Love

Hawaii in Pennsylvania
Dedicated to my wonderful husband, Robert

Submitted by Jeanine

I could see the guilt in his eyes; Robert was down on his knee proposing to me without an engagement ring. I understood the situation, it was simple, he couldn't afford it. We decided to have a small yet beautiful wedding. We were discussing honeymoons. I made it known to Robert how much I'd love to go to Hawaii. He said he would work on it. Reality kicked in and we were faced with the situation, buy a house or go on a honeymoon? As much as I wanted to go to Hawaii, we opted for the more practical choice. Robert said maybe for our 5 year anniversary. Well, 5 years and 2 kids later it seems less of a reality then when we got married in 1997. I chose to be a stay at home mom so we are working on one income.

Shortly after the birth of our 2nd daughter last year, Robert schemed up a plan to surprise me. While I was out, he dropped the kids off at a neighbors and then worked on the house. When I walked in the house there were inflatable palm trees, plastic leis, a sandbox, floral air fresheners, coconuts, and a Don Ho cassette playing. He was wearing a Hawaiian shirt and had a brass skirt for me. I was so shocked it took me 30 seconds to finally ask "What's all this?" He said, "I figured if we can't go to Hawaii, I could bring Hawaii to Pennsylvania." Tears filled my eyes. I couldn't believe the lengths he went through to make me happy. He advised me the neighbor was babysitting the kids. He went out of his way, took a day off from work, and decorated the house. I always knew what a loving, caring, and thoughtful man he was, but this took it to a whole new level. Time and time again he proves the unconditional love he has for me. I called my friends and family to brag about the romantic day we had. Some already knew and told me how eager he was to do this and was planning this for months. I once again got all choked up. What a truly special guy. About a month later and a month before

9-11-01, Robert quit his job of 9 years at the World Trade Center to take a job closer to home. Nothing ever hit me so hard than to think of what might have happend had he still worked there. I would shake and cry for weeks after that thinking of it. Now that I am more focused, I treasure every moment that we have. I consider myself the luckiest woman alive to have such an outstanding husband. He has taught me not to take anyone for granted and not to let the small things in life bother you. I love him with all of my heart. I want to turn the tables and show my appreciation and this time surprise him with a REAL trip to Hawaii.
