Love Stories of Hawaii

Timeless Love

The Promise
Dedicated to Daryl

Submitted by Leslie

This love story dates back several years. To fully appreciate the story I must start at the beginning. The year was 1980, and my family was suffering some severe personal trials. My older sister thought it would be helpful to have a distraction for me so she began taking me roller-skating every week. It was there that I met Daryl, the boy who instantly stole my heart. Only he didn't know it just yet. We were both incredibly young at the time, I was thirteen and he was sixteen. Obviously, this was NOT a match made in heaven... or so we thought. The Lord works in mysterious ways, and sometimes we just have to be patient. Daryl and I became friends, and we skated together every week for about a year. He didn't know it, but skating with him was the only pleasant thing happening in my life at the time. Our age difference made it imossible for him to even think of me as a potential girlfriend. So...our lives drifted apart for about five years.

During that time, Daryl finished school and began his career in the Armed Forces. It was then that he lived in Hawaii. I continued with school and graduated in 1985.

One night about a year later, some friends and I decided to go out on the town, and I ran into Daryl once again. It was the first time I had seen him in five years. He was on leave from the Army and only in town for a few days. We ended up dancing the night away, and by the end of the evening, he had asked me to marry him. I, of course, thought he was joking! How could he want to marry me if we hadn't even dated? Well, I agreed to go on a date... and we were married six months later.

He had been reassigned to Colorado Springs, and it was there that we began our life together. I always teased him that he waited to marry me until after he left Hawaii because he had too much fun being a single man there. He assured me that Hawaii was a beautiful place to live, but he would never be able to fully appreciate the beauty of the islands unless he had me there with him. He promised me from day one that we would go to Hawaii together and experience the islands as a couple. We have been married for nearly fifteen years now, and still haven't made it to the islands. We have three beautiful children and our lives continue to be blessed each day with the growing love and respect we have for each other and our family. I can't imagine a better way to celebrate our love than to spend time together in the most romantic place on earth! He is a man of his word, and I know that even if we are 75 years old before we make it to the islands, we will definitely go there together...his promise will be fulfilled.
