My Timeless Friendship
Dedicated to Dee Dee Hisler
Submitted by Ann
My story begins back in 1972 in Virginia. A childhood friend I never forgot. I knew I would be lost without her. We were friends brought together by fate. Our fathers were in the Marine Corps and we tried to fight the order. We always wore our hang ten shirts and constantly drew pictures of the place we called paradise. We made a pact to visit together.
My father retired before I entered high school, which sent us to California. My dear friend stayed behind. I withdrew and did not want to meet any new friends, because I couldn't bare a loss like that again. Shortly after I moved, my friend lost her father. When I heard the news, I cried and cried in my father's arms. At my age, I knew I couldn't just get on a plane to be with my friend that needed me. I felt so helpless.
It's strange how time passes, certain songs and even other peoples faces remind me of those wonderful times talking and dreaming about what it would be like to visit Hawaii. It consumed us.
I'll never forget the smile on my face on that sunny Saturday afternoon sitting in my attic rummaging through my past. I found a poem my dear friend wrote and a picture of us giving the hang loose sign. Her drawings of Hawaii won her numerous awards. It had been over 20 years, and when I looked at those special memories, I knew I had to find her again.
My search lead me to Texas, with a message saying, looking for a long lost friend, please call Seattle. We finally met in 1995, where we embraced our 25 year childhood friendship. To this day, we talk and laugh about fulfilling our dream.
You know what they say, you never forget your first true love, well I never forgot mine. My timeless friendship.
