Long Distance Love

Meet Me in the Middle
Dedicated to My husband, Roland

Submitted by Kari

My husband and I met while serving in the US Marine Corps at Cherry Point, NC. We worked in the same shop and he says he knew right away that he wanted to marry me. We started dating and became engaged after only 2 1/2 months, and soon after I received orders for a one year tour to Iwakuni, Japan. Everyone told us our relationship would never survive that kind of separation, considering the fact that many marriages fail under such trying circum- stances. We kept insisting that our relation- ship was different.

I went overseas in January of 1986 and we wrote almost every day, sometimes twice a day, for a year. I was confused and sometimes wondered if I was romantisizing this whole situation and pondered whether or not we really could make it work. I just held on to the memories of what we had when we were together and kept writing. We shared our hopes and dreams and got to know eachother probably better than we would have if we had been together geographically.

My year-long tour of duty was completed and I returned to the States in January of 1987 to finish my enlistment. In the course of that year, Roland had completed his enlistment in North Carolina, and moved to California where I was to be stationed next. We planned our reunion at the end of January in southern California, and two weeks later we were married on Valentine's Day.

Against all odds, we made it. It was one of the most difficult years of my life, but I'm so grateful that Roland believed in us enough to make it work, even when I sometimes doubted. We now have two beautiful daughters and this Valentine's Day we will celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary. It would be so romantic to spend it in Hawaii, meeting halfway in the middle of where we spent our first year together, separated!
