Timeless Love

The Luckiest Woman Alive
Dedicated to Steve

Submitted by Velda

When I was 15 years old, all of my girlfriends were "in love" with someone. I wasn't. I would not even say I was "in love" because I thought I was too young to know what that really meant -- that is until I met Steve. A friend of my sister's was living with us and going to college in the next town. She was dating a young man, but they had an argument. An old friend of hers asked her out, to make her feel better, but when her young man heard about their date, he put his fist through the wall of his mother's kitchen. Needless to say, they got back together, but that left her old friend dateless on a Saturday night. Velda to the rescue. She asked me if I would do her a favor and go out with Steve. Of course, the answer was yes -- what are friends for? My mother, on the other hand, wasn't so sure. I was only 15 and our family's rules were no dating until you were 16. But I guess even she could tell Steve was special. She insisted he come by to talk to her the night before our date. He did. I was not even there. It was Friday night and I was marching at a football game with the band. She asked him only one question, "Have you seen her?" His answer was yes and so was hers. The next night, we went out on a triple date with my sister and her friend, the one who set up the date, and their boyfriends. We went to a couple of dance clubs, and had a wonderful time. The next day, Steve came by, just to visit, and he's been in my life ever since. We were married 2 years later, and though we did not get to honeymoon in Hawaii, we have been happily married for 26 years. When people comment that 26 years is a long time to be with one man, all I can tell them is, "Not if it is the right man." I am probably the luckiest woman in the world! My best friend is my husband and the father of my children. The only man I've ever needed or wanted.
