Love Stories of Hawaii

Second Chance Love

Seconds Are Best
Dedicated to Julie Anna Smith

Submitted by Hal

As a previous resident of both the Territory of Hawaii and State of Hawaii, I think the whole island chain is great. My first marriage lasted 28 years, 9 years on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. I left there on 1-31-1971. My first marriage ended because my wife "didn't want to be married any longer." Devastated by the divorce, I resorted to working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. A young lady at work, and I became "buddies" as she was beginning to go through a divorce. Julie and I started going places together in February, 1985. No intimate relations; we just enjoyed each other's company. I had a real hangup because I am 20 years older than she is. We enjoyed plays, movies, parties, etc. and we were absolutely "best friends." On December 14,1985, Julie and I secretly went to Reno, Nevada and became married. This was the best decision that each of us has ever made. We are still the best of friends and we truly believe that is the secret to a happy marriage. We have, between us, 8 children, 5 of them mmine and 3, hers. They are all of legal age now and out on their own, however, they are very close to us. We have 17 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Julie and I have never had a serious disagreement or argument in the 15 years we have been together. On our 13th anniversary, we planned a trip to Hawaii. In March 1999, we arrived on Oahu and stayed in Waikiki for 5 nights, went to Kauai and stayed for 4 nights, and then went to Kona, Hawaii and stayed for 5 nights. The only disagreement we had over that trip was our favorite Island. Mine was Kauai and hers was Hawaii. We are planning a second trip to Hawaii in the near future and can only hope that it goes as well as our marriage has. The last 15 years of my life has been the greatest of my entire lifetime. Julie feels the same way. We love each other in hearts and actions.
