Love Stories of Hawaii

Timeless Love

Finding Ourselves
Dedicated to My Wonderful Son, Ian

Submitted by Lynda

In March, 1984, I suddenly found myself widowed at age 32 with a seven-year-old son to raise alone. In an instant, our lives had changed dramatically -- we moved in with my sister and her husband so that I could take time to plan where our lives would go from here. A month later, I was no further ahead, my son and I were constantly arguing, and there was never any privacy to air our emotions. On my way to the store to pick up milk, I instead found myself in a travel agency purchasing two tickets to Hawaii -- was I losing my mind? Three days later, my son and I arrived on Oahu. That evening after unpacking, we were both so tired that we went to bed early, around 9:00 p.m. It was probably around midnight that I heard voices outside. I woke my son up and we went to the lanai to see what was happening. There, down by the pool, were five young men singing. There was no music, just five beautiful voices harmonizing. We sat down and listened to the most beautiful sounds we had ever heard -- the ocean in the background, the trees rustling, and these incredible voices that did not need music. My son and I talked, we cried, we laughed, and we listened until 5:00 a.m. that morning. From that moment on, I knew that we were going to be just fine, and that no matter what happened, we would always have each other. That magical night in Hawaii will always remain one of the most important nights of my life. I think of it often, and it has helped me through troubled times more than I can say.
