Dad's New Disciple Story
Dedicated to All

Submitted by Joannie

I will always love my father and his stories. He was born and raised on the island of Molokai in Hawaii. He lived near Kaluapapa, the leper colony where Father Damien cared for those suffering from Hansen's disease. He told me that the patients there often became very spiritual, perhaps due to their isolation or the beauty of the tropical peninsula where they lived or both. My father often liked to retell this story he heard from a leper originally from India whenever I complained about something silly: The New Disciple: As they were beginning a morning meditation, a Guru instructed his newest disciple to vocalize any dominant, recurring thought that might intrude upon his meditation. Before long, the young disciple complained, "Guru, sometimes I'd like to ask God just why He allows poverty, famine, and injustice to exist when He could do something about it." "What's stopping you, my young disciple?" replied the Guru, "Are you afraid He might ask you the same question?"
