Second Chance Love

What a Difference a Day Makes!
Dedicated to my one true love -- Vaughn

Submitted by Cris

Going to Hawaii the summer of 1995 should have been the romantic trip that I had always dreamed of and desired. Instead, I was chaperone to my teenaged daughter and her friend. Arriving in Honolulu, smelling the flowers, feeling the air, and hearing the excitement of the people did nothing but make me wonder what I was doing here without my own true love. As the tropical breezes blew and the waves crashed in, all I could think about was how this is not what should be happening. My husband had died 5 years previously, and the love that I had wished for seemed so illusive. On the shores of Oahu, I couldn't help but see all the couples walking arm in arm, sharing looks of love and adoration, and I wondered - would I ever have the chance of another love? A love that would be romantic and electrifying, and most of all, I dreamed of being able to walk with that love on these sandy beaches. Within a few months after returning home, the memories of Hawaii and the thoughts of romantic love still had not left my heart and mind. When you are in your 40's, have lost a spouse, and your children have left home, it's often those memories that keep the spark of hope alive in your heart. Some days, I didn't think there would ever be someone for me. But, oh what a difference a day can make! Just when I felt like giving up, he came along. He was a friend of my brothers, someone who was so romantic, someone who shared my dreams to walk together along the ocean shore letting the rhythm of the waves be our music of love. Our first date was wonderful. On our second date, he told me he was smitten by me and crazy for me and in love with me. I felt the same. Eight weeks later, we were married. Now 3-½ years later, I realize that what I saw in Hawaii is now alive in my heart. Someday my husband and I will be able to go to Hawaii. I want to take him to those beaches where I longingly viewed those couples. It's our turn now. We both have found a deeper and truer love the second time around - more exciting than ever imagined. And I'm so glad that I didn't give up - what a difference that day made for us!
