Second Chance Love

What Words Can Do
Dedicated to Nancy D

Submitted by Jimmy

I met her almost fifteen years ago; I was newly divorced, a single parent with two young children. On weekends my kids stayed with their mother, so I managed to get out and hit the club scene, with mixed results. All that changed when I met Nancy. She was a lot younger than me, and strikingly beautiful, but she loved to dance, and for some reason, she liked dancing with me. I'd see her every weekend, and it took a while for me to work up the courage to let her know that I was seriously interested in her; I did it by using a skill that still serves me pretty well - I wrote her a poem.

Fast-forward thirteen years. She's married to someone else, I'm still a single parent, but almost an empty-nester; my oldest is away at college and my younger child is close to being out of the house as well. I find out, quite by accident, that she had recently become a widow and had a small child. We got back in touch and have been corresponding via the internet for the past two years. We've seen each other only a few times in that period. She just wants to stay friends, and I respect her wishes, but wouldn't it be nice if the thing that brought us together in the first place - writing - enabled us to get together again, by winning us a trip to Hawaii?
